Why Private Lessons?
Each child has specific needs, tenancies, and growth that need to be nurtured properly in order to be high achieving on their own instrument. This is where private lessons come in - they are monumental in helping your child become the successful musician that we know they can be. It is imperative to understand the value and importance that private lessons can be for your child. Every day, we see our students in a classroom setting that ranges from 15 to 60 students, depending on how big the ensemble size is. We teach to the ensemble’s needs, no doubt, but sometimes in a 45 minute class period we can’t take the time to isolate every single student’s different and individual needs. This is where private lessons - one on one time with an outstanding musician and educator - can address the individual needs of every student in a timely, thoughtful, and purposeful manner. This will accelerate their musicianship and playing ability, providing the opportunity for the student to advance to the top of their ensemble quickly. There is not a more beneficial way to invest in your child’s education than by choosing private lessons.
- "But my child isn't going to be a music major, do they still need private lessons?"
Even if your child chooses not to pursue music as a career, taking lessons teaches many critical life lessons such as responsibility, goal setting, and commitment to a craft or process. The art of learning hard work towards a common goal of excellence applies far beyond learning to play an instrument and can be applied to any aspect of the student's life.

Here’s What You Need to Know:
When Do Private Lessons Start? How long do they last? When are they?
Please don’t hesitate to ask anyone - the directors, private staff, or colleagues - with questions that you may have about this whole process. We can’t stress to you enough how important private lessons are to a students growth and development as a musician - we wouldn’t be where we are today if it weren’t for all of the private lesson instruction we have been blessed to have throughout our own musical careers. We look forward to seeing your child's growth in the Harlan Band Program. Go Hawks!
When Do Private Lessons Start? How long do they last? When are they?
- Private Lessons will start the second week of school. Didn’t sign up for lessons right away? Not a problem - you can begin private lessons at any time during the school year (but the sooner, the better!).
- Lessons will last for half of a class period long (about 25 minutes). Upon request, lessons can last the entirety of the class period. However, time slots are limited. Lesson availability will be determined by our private lesson instructors availability. Sign up quick to get first dibs on availability!
- Lessons will usually take place once a week during the child’s band class period. However, if our instructor’s availability becomes taken up, we may have to schedule lessons before or after school. The sooner you sign up, the more likely you will get a lesson time during the class period.
- Lessons will cost $18 dollars for half a period, and $36 dollars for the entire period once a week. Payments can be made either weekly, bi-weekly, or in advance - parents preference. You will coordinate with your private lesson instructor on this preference.
- Late Payments will only be allowed for 1 lesson at a time. So, if a child forgets to give the instructor the money, they can simply give them the money the next week. However, if the child shows up 2 weeks in a row without payment, he or she will be denied a lesson until payment is received. The instructor’s time is valuable and should be respected, just as your child’s time is valuable to them. Please be mindful of this.
- Payments can be made in the form of Cash or Check. Credit Card or online transactions may be made at the discretion of the private lesson instructor. You will coordinate this with them as well.
- Questions? Please email your instructor below or one of the high school directors for more information.
