ABOUT THE GUARD!
Color Guard is a year round program that competes as the Color Guard unit associated with the Harlan Marching Band during the fall competitive season and football games, then transforms to the Winter Guard in the Spring. An Harlan High School student can join the Color Guard or Winter Guard without prior experience. A willingness to learn is required. Students who are not already enrolled in a band class must be enrolled in Color Guard as a class, which is 8th period. If an instrumentalist member of the Harlan Band would like to do Color Guard or Winter Guard they can do so by still being enrolled in their band class if they do not have room in their schedule to add the Color Guard class.
Winter Guard rehearsal schedules outside of the school day will take place on days determined by facility and faculty availability and begin after marching band season has concluded. These will carry on through the competitive Winter Guard season. The performance schedule for Winter Guard is not set until late November.
Our wonderful Color Guard instructors are Ms. Randy Miles, and Guard Technician Cindy Tames! Learn more about them below:
Cindy Tames serves as the Color Guard Director at Harlan High School. Her duties involve supervising all color guard and winter guard activities, designing choreography and other dance-related routines, and coordinating recruitment efforts at feeder campuses across the district.
Ms. Tames is a fourth-year business major at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Ms. Tames first joined the staff at Harlan in 2021 as a technician under the guidance of Randi Miles, her color guard instructor at the UTSA. Ms. Tames was a color guard performer at UTSA from 2019-2021 where she performed a variety of roles. Ms. Tames has been involved with the pageantry and marching arts for over half a decade, formerly serving as a technician at other schools in the San Antonio area.
Ms. Tames has also served in several managerial roles for different retailers in the greater San Antonio area. Most recently, she served as an assistant area manager at Amazon's SAT 1 Facility in Schertz, TX. She has also worked as a manager and coordinator for TJX Company stores, Dick's Sporting Goods, and USAA.
When she is not directing color guard activities, Ms. Tames enjoys spending time with her family, making tiktoks with her boyfriend, and cuddling with her poodle named Sunshine.
