Hi Hawk Family,
We had a great last week of summer band camp. The students did an amazing job at both the Meet the Hawks pep rally and the Summer Band Blowout. We are so proud of what they learn in just a few short weeks. Thank you to all of the parents that came out to support the band. A special thanks goes out to the parents who helped set up and tear down the swag, helped cook, helped wrap, helped ice down the drinks, and help sell all of the items. We definitely could not do this without all of your hard work and dedication.
Friday’s rehearsal was both great but also had an area where we needed improvement. We were able to learn the entirety of our opener marching and playing. While this was a huge success, we had 20 STUDENTS ABSENT from rehearsal. These rehearsals do not function the same without EVERY SINGLE STUDENT showing up to our rehearsals. Those students that missed out on these rehearsals missed out on so much information that got covered and is almost impossible to make up. Band is a team effort and we MUST aim for 100% attendance from our students. Missing a rehearsal not only affects the student that misses but ALSO affects all of the surrounding students that are having to pull the weight of the students that are missing. It is impossible to clean our marching show when students do not show up to a rehearsal or worse yet, a contest. There is so much work that goes into a production like the one we are trying to put on and so we need all of the students all of the time. Judges at the contest will absolutely notice where there are students missing and this will negatively affect our score. The band’s goal is to make Area Finals which has not happened since before Covid. Our schedule has been posted and will rarely change so please schedule all dentist appointments, doctor visits, and anything else that keeps our students from our rehearsals. The Harlan Band must strive for excellence in all we do and that includes our rehearsals.
Lastly, this week is our first week of school. Rehearsals will start after school from 5:00pm-7:30pm three days a week. Grades will be entered daily throughout the week. If a student does not show up for our after school rehearsal, their grade will suffer and they may also lose their spot on the field. We have some very dedicated students in the program and want to honor them by continuing the Harlan success.

Game/ Contest Days- If you missed the General membership meeting this past Tuesday, we discussed several different things. One of them was where to park/ drop off on game days and contest days. We will close the gate that is closest to the band pad and block off the other side exit to keep cars out of the small parking lot for safety reasons. When we are loading/ unloading these days, our 18 wheeler will be parked on the small street and our 8 buses will pull up right next to it. It will be very crammed and we want to make sure everyone is safe as we load/ unload. We ask that you park in the large parking lot outside of the gates and wait for your students. The expectation is that students will need to collect their instruments, hang up their uniform, and clean the band hall before they can check out with their section leader. ALL STUDENTS MUST CHECK OUT WITH THEIR SECTION LEADERS BEFORE LEAVING. In the past, we have had a handful of students cleaning and organizing the area keeping them there much longer than needed. This is a team effort and we need all students to pitch in. This process can take up to 20-25 minutes for students so if you are waiting in the car, come out and help our roadies in the unloading process. This will speed up the process tremendously.
GroupFund Fundraiser- Our first fundraiser of the year began on Thursday and we have already reached $10,000 in just a few short days. Our goal is to reach $25,000 and help reduce if not have ALL student fees taken care of. 90% of these funds will go directly to your students account. Any excess funds will roll over into the following year as well. PARENTS, please double check that your students have submitted the minimum amount of phone numbers. Reminder, all fees need to be paid off by November. Take advantage of this fundraiser.
Chaperone Signups- We will add a SignUp Genius link where you can fill out which games/ contests you would like to volunteer for. Chaperones will be responsible for monitoring the students while watching them have fun. Please make sure your background check has been completed through NISD. This MUST be done prior to signing up to volunteer. Click HERE to submit it.
Below is the link to sign up to chaperone for our games. Reminder, you MUST have done your background check prior to signing up.
